North is a location-based mobile application that helps you discover meaningful places in nature through the stories of others. By aggregating locations and personal experiences from its users, North creates a curated database of places in nature from around the world. While we often fault our obsession with the digital world for our lack of engagement with the outdoors, North explores how technology can be used to bring us closer to nature. The entire project is comprised of a business model, UX design, pitch book, marketing materials, video, and a pitch presentation as thesis requirements of the MFA Design Entrepreneurship program at the School of Visual Arts.
My name is Donica Ida and I’m a graphic designer from Hawaii. I received my BFA in Visual Communication Design from the University of Washington in Seattle, and my MFA in Design Entrepreneurship from the School of Visual Arts. I’m inspired by do-gooders and good thinkers, and I believe design should be responsible, beautiful, and with purpose. I have a particular interest in typography, interaction design, and brand systems. Other things I’m into include yoga, ramen, and used bookstores. I’m currently freelancing from my Brooklyn apartment, various coffee shops, and design studios around New York City.
